First order neurons carrying fine touch, pressure and vibration sensations pass through the dorsal root of the spinal cord before entering the dorsal white matter of the spinal cord (Dorsal Column). The axons travel up to synapse with second order neurons in the medullary nuclei. The second order neuron axons cross the midline in the medulla to form the Medial Lemniscus, ascending neurons that synapse with third order neurons in the thalamus. From the thalamus, third order neurons extend to the primary somatosensory cortex located in the postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe.
