Description

This specimen is mostly sandstone. The black mineral seen here is pyrolusite, one of several different manganese oxide minerals. The branching tree-like pattern is termed *dendritic*. Dendrites of this sort form on bedding planes or fractures, typically in sandstones or related rocks.
