The Ashbringer was a weapon forged from a shard of pure light. Being directly tied to the duality of Light and Darkness, a blade such as this is as absolutely corruptable as it is holy. Having passed hands several times, this blade was once corrupted in an act of betrayal, now seething with the very same unholy magic it once sought to destory. Back in the day this weapon was the be all, end all. If you could equip this weapon, it was on your list of must get weapons in Classic WoW. It is often viewed as the ultimate and final reward of Vanilla WoW, for what other weapon could live up to the prestiege and glory of weilding a weapon so core to the identity of Warcraft as a whole.
