The squamosal forms the caudolateral corner of the skull roof and part of the dorsotemporal fenestra. Dorsolaterally, its portion of the skull roof tapers out to form a squamosal prong on top of the element's paroccipital attachment. Laterlly, the squamosal forms the roof of the external acoustic meatus. A large fossa is present where the muscles of the external ear flap attach.
