* Period/Epoch: Paleogene / Miocene * Rock Formation: Unknown * State, County: Unknown Taxonomy: Mammalia>Artiodactyla>Oreodontidae>Merychyus sp. Merychuys is an extinct group of herbivorous hoofed mammal that lived in modern-day United States and Canada during the Miocene. Their fossil record extends for 10 million years within the Miocene and are quite common to find in that time range, with nine distinct species being described in the group. The animal is an ancestral cousin to modern-day camels, were the size of sheep, and had large canines. This is the upper jaw bone of the animal, and was likely deformed by predation or by fossilization processes. Scanned with the David SLS-2
