At the time without any theodolite, an unequaled geometric feat! The Taj Mahal is drawn according to a perfectly symmetrical plan, designed to bring out more particularly the bilateral symmetry with respect to a central axis on which the main elements are arranged. Its masonry structure of bricks mortared with lime mortar is clad in red sandstone and marble and set with inlays of precious and semi-precious stones. The red sandstone mosque and guest pavilion of the Taj Mahal contrasts sharply with the central marble tomb. The two buildings rest on a vast platform surmounting the terrace in front. The structures of the mosque and the guest pavilion are identical. They include an imposing oblong prayer hall, made up of three vaulted bays forming an arc with the monumental central portal. The framing of the arches and the eardrums are clad in white marble. The eardrums are entirely covered with floral arabesques in stone marquetry and the arches are edged with moldings in the form of twist
