Wooden sword handle from the wreck of the Earl Of Abergavenny. ID: EOA:2022.110.2 Collection: Earl of Abergavenny Classification: Passengers/military Measurements: Length 46mm Width 30mm Date made: as yet unknown Display: not on display Manufacturer/Creator: as yet unknown Credit: Portland Museum Trust One of several sword grips recovered, this would originally have been covered in leather and is most likely from a 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre. It probably belonged to one of the Light Dragoons regiments on board, those being the 8th, 19th, 21st and 24th regiments. Cornet G A Borgoyne, who survived and wrote most of the Correct Narrative of the sinking, was a member of the 8th Light Dragoons.
