Baptismal Font - Church of El Salvador

Description

The church of El Salvador is a good example of Spanish medieval Romanesque art, although it has additions and subsequent reforms. The church is located in the small town of Carabias, currently belonging to the municipality of Sigüenza in Guadalajara (Spain). Possibly built in the 13th century after the Christian conquest of this territory, its most valuable element is its arcaded gallery. Inside, it preserves a magnificent medieval baptismal font carved from a single stone block. Due to its large size it seems destined for baptism by immersion. It is decorated with eight gallons. On its sides it preserves two metal anchors, possibly intended to fix the wooden cover that should protect the water.
