Collection and item number: MU #8 Origin: China Media: Textile and wood Size: 3 1/2”H x 9”L x 3 1/2”D Note: In the 17 th century, the Manchus conquered China and ruled as the Qing dynasty. They forbade the practice of foot binding. Women could mimic having “lotus feet” by wearing elevated shoes that forced the wearer to walk with small steps. The tips of these shoes peeked out from under long robes, making the woman’s feet appear dainty, as if they had been bound. Elevated shoes also allowed Manchu women to tower over female Han Chinese who were under their subjugation.
