Built in 1873 as the local magistrate's court, it also served as a fire station until 1919. Its walls are of hand cut limestone. The tower was used as an observation point during the Hosay Riots (1884) and the Oilfield Riots (1937) . It stopped being a court house in 1931 when a new one was built next door. It served as police headquarters in the south of Trinidad until a new one was built in 1996. The old dormitory wing was destroyed by fire in 2009.
