Syd Scroogie was born in Canada but was raised in Dundee. During WWII he was an officer in the Lord Lovat's Scouts, which were a mountain warfare unit. Near the end of WWII he stepped on a mine in the Italian mountains and lost the sight in both eyes and the lost the lower part of his right leg. After the war, amongst many achievements he taught himself Greek using braille and also wrote poetry. Syd carried on his true love, hill walking and spent many days in the Sidlaws north of Dundee. This memorial was erected to celebrate his inspiring life. The cairn was unvailed in 2000 in the presence of Syd who walked up the hill, aged 81, guided by his wife. He died in 2006. http://www.scottish-places.info/people/famousfirst3202.html https://www.flickr.com/photos/tairmuir/16283944756 Photos taken using iPhone 5s
