Dubbed ‘Lucky’ the cat, this decidedly unlucky creature was buried under the foundation stone of Her Majesty’s Theatre in Lydiard Street, Ballarat, in 1874. This was to satisfy a superstition that burying a dead cat under the foundations would bring good luck for the construction of the building. Lucky was rediscovered when extendions to the original building took place in the 1990s, and then put in a box to stick around a while longer on display.
