This house belonged to Thomas Calhoun Walker, the first African American lawyer in Gloucester County. Born a slave in 1862, T.C. Walker dedicated his life to defending the rights of African Americans in his community. In 1891 he was elected to the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors and went on to serve as Virginia’s first African American Collector of Customs and Advisor of Negro Affairs for the Virginia Emergency Relief Administration. He was also a superintendent of Gloucester’s African American schools. Hampton University currently owns the property and plans to restore it in the coming years. This model was created with a Phantom 4 Pro drone and Agisoft Metashape photogrammetry software.
