* Origin: The Netherlands * Producer: N.H. – N.V. Nederland Haarlem * Date: 1950 * Size: 18,5cm x 15cm x 4,5cm From 1950 on, petlamps were the most used in coal mines: they are lighter, more convenient and more portable than the previous lamps. This kind of lamp consists of two parts: a battery box, that could last until 14 hours, and a cable with a lamphead attached to it. The battery box was attached to the miners’ belts, and the lamphead was attached to their helmets. This explains why the petlamps have this name: pet, in Dutch, means helmet. This functionality is also the reason why they made miners lives much easier: with the lamp in their helmets miners not only had light wherever they looked but also had both hands free to perform their work.
