Gilded Bourdaloue

A [bourdaloue](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300198892) or ladies travelling chamberpot. The interior, rim, base and handle are all in [gilt](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300053789). The body of the pot is green with gilt decoration in the [French Empire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_style) style using Egyptian motifs. It took its more general name from a Jesuit father, one [Louis Bourdaloue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Bourdaloue), whose long sermons, preached at [Versailles](http://www.geonames.org/2969679/versailles.html), were extremely popular, especially with the ladies of the court who, in order to secure a seat, used to arrive hours before the scheduled time of the sermon.
