During the era of the first pharaonic dynasties these tombs became monumental works assuming a geometrically defined shape. This configuration took the name of màstaba, a word that means "bench" or "banquet". The matsaba was divided into two areas, one external and one underground. A precise ingot, resting on the surface of the ground to protect the deep burials below. A vertical access shaft characterized the underground part, leading to the burial chamber where the deceased rested. There was also a third area with an altar for offerings and a "false door": through this magical gate, made of stone or wood, the Soul (Ka) of the deceased could pass to the afterlife, from the dead to that of the living and vice versa.
