Tradition from 1723 suggests the effigy is of Friar Bickerton. Historic Environment Scotland notes the knight is in late 13th century armour. The tomb is in the ruined Carmelite Friary of Luffness by Aberady in woods between Aberady and Luffness House. There is mention of one John of Bickerton who held the castle at Luffness as a tenant of Robert of Pinkeny in 1296.
