Riesseekalk (lacustrine limestone), Germany

Description

Lacustrine limestones within the Ries impact crater (Miocene), which were deposited in the lake that formed after the meteorite impact. These limestones contain freshwater gastropods, and this particular outcrop also shows some stromatolitic laminations. Disused quarry near Maihingen, Germany. The outcrop is about 15 m long, and 4 m tall at the highest point.
