Nowadays, a hairdryer is one of the most important tools for hairstyling. Hot air causes transient hydrogen bonds to form in the hair strands being styled. The bonds are relatively strong and enable a hairstyle to be formed. They dissolve after the hair is washed. The name föhn denotes a warm mountain wind. Over time, the letter “h” was removed from the name and the Fön brand name was reserved. The name Foen was also used interchangeably. The devices became popular enough for the word föhn became synonymous with the hairdryer in German. The first Fön hairdryers were advertised as devices not only for drying hair, but also for curing rheumatism, warming beds, heating up bathing linen, skincare, and animal grooming.
