The Saarschleife near Mettlach is located in the lower Saar valley. It is a meandering arch that got its strange shape from the regional geology. Despite the hard rock in the underground, the so-called Taunus quartzite, the Saarschelife was able to form at this point. This was possible because of fault systems as well as older water systems from the Permian occur in this area, which essentially determine the course of the Saarschleife.
