The British Land Pattern Musket (a.k.a. Brown Bess), was a widely used smoothbore musket during the war of American Independence. It was used for a hundred years, many times modified. It was first put into British Army service in 1722 and took out of service in 1838. The Brown Bess was converted into the Pattern Model 1839. However, many of the original Brown Bess muskets were destroyed when the Tower Of London caught on fire in 1841.
