ZOETROPES like other pre-cinema animation inventions (ie. Phenakistascope, Thaumatrope, and Flipbooks) capture the fascination by leveraging a perceptual phenomenon called, "persistence of vision," in which the human retina retains an image frame shown in fractions of a second, creating the illusion of smooth movement when there are any alterations between frames. The novelty of a zoetrope is in it's simplicity, and our ability to replicate it in virtual space.
