Gadulka

Description

The presented instrument, resembling a fiddle, is referred to by the Bulgarian Romani as a gadulka or gydulka (Bulgarian Гъдулка, chatterbox). It was brought to Tarnów by ethnographers Adam Bartosz and Paweł Lechowski from one of their research expeditions to Bulgaria. The gadułka (the chatterbox) was given to them by the owner – a Romani from a group of Ursari (bear trainers), called Georgiy Stane, who played it for his trained bear to dance. A gadułka (the chatter box) is a Bulgarian folk string instrument with a short neck. The soundbox resembles a pear cut in half. The sound holes are almost square. A gadułka (the chatter box) usually has three sound strings and ten drone strings. When playing on the sound strings, the drone strings emit a characteristic buzzing background for the main tune.
